Why upsells work

An upsell works when the traveller is already considering a category and can see why the next level is better. The offer does not introduce a new need. It sharpens a decision already in progress.

That is why comparison is central. A higher fare needs visible differences. A paid seat needs a reason beyond being more expensive. A service tier needs to show what changes for the traveller if something goes wrong.

Where upsells fail

Upsells fail when they look like pressure. If the lower option feels unusable, the higher option feels like a penalty rather than a choice. If the benefit is vague, the traveller assumes the seller is simply trying to lift the cart value.

The best upsell is specific. It explains the difference, shows the price in the right context, and leaves the original choice intact.

Upsell versus cross-sell

An upsell moves within one category. A cross-sell adds a different category. A traveller choosing a fare family may be shown a more flexible fare as an upsell. The same traveller may later see a checked bag as a cross-sell.

The distinction helps teams design cleaner journeys. If every offer is treated as an upsell, the experience becomes a ladder with no clear end. If every offer is treated as a cross-sell, the seller misses moments where comparison would make a higher-value choice easier.
